Sunflower seeds come from the easily recognizable sunflower plant Helianthus annuus and are harvested from the large yellow flower heads where a single sunflower can contain up to 2,000 seeds! Sunflower seeds are encased in inedible black-and-white striped shells, also referred to as a hull or husk. Sunflower seeds are oftentimes sold roasted with other herbs or flavor profiles to enhance flavor, although they are perfectly delicious raw!
