The pecan comes from a species called the Hickory and is found along the Mississippi River in Northern Mexico and in the Southern United States. Between the two countries they harvest and produce around 93% of the world’s pecans. Cultivation of the pecan did not begin until the 1880s in the U.S and were known to be a delicacy. Pecans were widely traded and consumed by Native Americans and have a sweeter taste used for such foods like praline candy and pecan pie.
